报告摘要:

Thermal transport in nanoscale is quite different from that in macro-scale. There are many anomalies in the micro and nano-scale. For example, in nano scale system, the Fourier law of heat conduction is not valid any more, namely,  the thermal conductivity is a divergent quantity; the Kapitza thermal resistance is asymmetric. If the an-harmonicity (nonlinearity) is larger enough, the negative differential thermal resistance  - the larger the temperature difference the smaller the heat current, can be observed. In the first part of my talk I will present numerical and experimental results about these anomalies. In the second part of my talk, I will discuss the emerging field of Phononics which is a new science and technology of controlling and manipulating thermal energy and processing information by phonons. Several ways of controlling thermal energy will be discussed in detail. Other phononic devices used to process phononic information, like thermal logic gates and thermal memory will be also briefly presented.

Professor Li received his B.Sci (1985) from Nanjing University, M. Sci (1989) from Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing. In 1990 he received the Max-Planck Scholarship and went to Germany for his Ph. D study. He finished his Ph. D thesis within two years, and got the Dr.rer.nat degree in 1992 from Universität of Oldenburg. He joined NUS in July 2000 as an assistant professor, and promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2003 and full professor in 2007. He is currently Executive Director, NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering (NGS), and Director of Centre for Computational Science and Engineering.
He has published more than 170 papers in refereed journals including 24 in Phys. Rev. Lett. and delivered more than 110 keynote and invited talks. He has been awarded National Science Award 2005, Singapore, and 2005 Asia Achievement Award of Overseas Chinese Physics Association (OCPA), 2007 IOP World Scientific Prize and Medal. His research interests include but not limited to heat conduction in low dimensional systems, energy transport in nano scale materials, thermoelectric effect in nanostructures, effect of quantum chaos on quantum computation, complex networks and systems biology, non- equilibrium  statistical  mechanics,  inverse  scattering  problem,  waves propagation and scattering in random/turbulent media etc.
