报告摘要:

One of the major outstanding challenges in physics is to understand the behavior of glassy materials, where competing interactions lead to complex dynamics that span time scales ranging over more than 20 orders of magnitude. Direct simulations of glassy materials will always be slow. But physicists have been learning how to be lazy (i.e., efficient) from computer scientists. Simulations using accelerated methods for spin glass models are giving us deeper insights into the intricate organization of the thermodynamic "landscape", "chaos" (a great sensitivity of the state to temperature), and the remarkable memory effects seen in experiments.

报告人简介:

Alan Middleton is a American professor of physics at Syracuse University. He recevied his Ph.D's degree in physics from Princeton University in 1990. His current research involves materials with disorder (such as spin glasses), algorithms for efficient simulation of complex dynamics and so on. In the past decades, he has published more than 40 articles   (including 15 PRLs, totally been cited over 1000 times) and pioneered some modern views on the glass systems.
