Abstract:
Interface problems are omnipresent in science and engineering,
including multiphase flows, nano-electronic devices, electromagnetic
wave propagation in heterogeneous waves, implicit solvent models
in structural biology, biological membrane, etc. Theoretical
modeling of interface problems often involves partial differential
equations with discontinuous coefficients and singular sources.
Some Cartesian grid techniques, such as the immersed boundary
method (IBM) and the immersed interface method (IIM), and the
discontinuous Galerkin approach have emerged in the past few
decades as suitable candidates for interface problems.
In this talk, I will introduce the 3D matched interface and boundary
(MIB) method developed in my group which advances the field in
the following aspects: First, the construction of up to sixth-order 3D
elliptic interface schemes. Second, methods for arbitrarily complex
3D interface geometry. Third, schemes for non-smooth interfaces,
i.e., interface with geometric singularities. Finally, a Dirichlet-to-
Neumann mapping algorithm for regularizing singular sources. I will
outline the applications to nano-electronic devices, fluid flows, and
multiscale modeling of biomolecules.
