报告摘要:
General Relativity is the best model available to describe gravity. When general relativity is applied to the entire Universe, this is cosmology. Cosmology, however, is plagued by two serious problems, the dark energy problem and the dark matter problem. Dark energy and dark matter together make up approximately 95\% of the energy content of the Universe. There does not exist a satisfactory theoretical model for either of those. This fact is used to motivate the study of theories which are `beyond' general relativity. Such theories are collectively known as modified theories of gravity. This talk gives a broad overview of the different types of theories, briefly shows some of my recent results in this field, and discusses future research challenges.

报告人简介: Prof Christian G Böehmer is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics of University College London, and an Honorary Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. Since September 2023 he has been the head of department of UCL Mathematics. His main research interests are in theoretical physics and applied mathematics, in particular the mathematical foundations of General Relativity and Cosmology. He also studies continuum mechanics field theories. He has published over 90 papers and his work has received over 8000 citations in total. In 2016 he published an undergraduate introductory textbook on General Relativity and Cosmology with World Scientific, which has been one of the publisher's best-selling titles since then.
